KINDERGARTEN
Circus Gymnastics Introduction to gymnastics apparatus and techniques such as basic tumbling, as well as games designed to develop strength and flexibility. Instruction is designed to enhance and challenge each child’s individual capabilities, while emphasizing safety. An end-of-term “Big Top” show is planned! Our coaches include experienced gymnastics coach Karen Valentin-Griffin (who has taught in some of NYC's top programs) and circus arts teachers Max Arnaud and Andrea Andresakis.
Fiesta! (Latin Culture, Gr. K-1) An imaginary journey through the Caribbean and Central and South America, drawing upon our visits to the American Museum of Natural History People's Center as well as in-class explorations of the music, dance, cooking, sports, crafts, and traditions of each of the countries the children "visit." Taught by experienced Dual Immersion consultant Gloria Zwick, so you know this will be a lively fiesta!
MacKids: Explore! (Computer Lab; Gr. K-1) Students will enjoy our Computer Lab's wide selection of educational software, with a focus on basic literacy and math skills. Taught by experienced PS87 teachers including Bob D'Andrea.

Movie Magic Under the creative direction of "Imagination Station" teacher and filmmaker Amey Goerlich, children will learn the behind-the-scenes fun that goes into making a film, including special effects, lighting, inventive props and costumes, and more. From Curious George to King Arthur to Cinderella, familiar stories
take on new magic and and meaning -- you'll want to be there "opening night" when we screen our young filmmakers' professionally edited DVD! Amey Goerlich has been teaching children's film and theatre classes for more than a decade.

MathMagic (Math Enrichment) This enrichment class, led by PS87 teacher Laura Resnick and NYC teacher Bernard Zwick,
uses the acclaimed KidzMath program of cooperative games and storybook-based activities to promote mathematical understanding
and social development. Children in KidzMath programs across the country develop math skills and gain confidence, increase their
enjoyment of math, and improve their abilities to work with others. Best of all, KidzMath makes math FUN!
Yummies Around the World Preparing international recipes -- some from the children’s families -- is a wonderful activity that fosters understanding of other cultures as well as enjoyment of new culinary treats. “Restaurant” games will explore manners around the world. GRADES 2 TO 3
Author! Author! Children will design, write, and illustrate their own books, which they will bind into beautiful volumes. Children will have an opportunity to use a variety of media, including photographs and watercolors. A joyous journey in creative selfexpression, from first inspiration to final publication party! Taught by 2nd-grade teacher Lisa Shlansky, with specialists from the Children's Museum of Manhattan bookmaking program.
Snapshots & Scrapbooks (Digital Photography, 2+) Using digital cameras, students will learn the basics of color photography, and then learn how to use their photos with personal mementos, stickers, and decorative paper to design imaginative scrapbooks and other creative keepsakes. Taught by experienced Afterschool creative arts teacher Brittany Hall.
City Adventures/Ice Skating An ice skating in the rink at Rockefeller Center or Bryant Park during ice skating season (beginning late October/early November). And before then -- what’s your pleasure? Bowling, boating, or a home sport in Central Park? Or maybe it's the zoo, the wax museum, or the Intrepid's flight simulator? There are wonderful opportunities for city adventures all over Manhattan, and we're ready to explore them! Teachers include experienced Afterschool coach Mike Vega.

GRADES 3 TO 6
Robotics Team Challenge Working in small groups, students will explore and apply basic robotic fundamentals using LEGO Mindstorms technology -- featuring powerful NXT bricks, expanded sensor capabilities, wireless Bluetooth technology and new programming software. Through design, construction, and programming of individually invented robotic models, students will become active masters of technology. Taught by PS87 teachers including Molly Jahraus, Carmela Oliveri, and Kazue Takenaga.
Shining Star Musical Theatre: Children will experience the magic of musical theatre, as they work towards a June 2011 production based on a celebrated Broadway classic (rights in negotiation). Children will work in small groups as well as full-stage ensemble with theatre professionals skilled in character and scene study, dance and choreography, vocal direction, and other stagecraft skills. Director Jill Ahrold, musical director Robby Stamper, choreographer Tiffany Kraus, and acting coach Sarah Hankins have worked with thousands of young people in all stages of musical theatre production.
Note: This club is designed to be a full-year commitment on the part of the cast. First semester classes end at 5:30 PM. There is a $50 materials fee per semester.
Wok’s Up Doc? (Healthy Cooking) Welcome to our Demo(lition) Kitchen -- we call it that because every week our PS87 chefs will “blow up” preconceived ideas about food that’s good for you. Delicious fruit smoothies, stir fries, grilled kabobs, and other spa cuisine -- we’ll do all this and more. Teachers include experienced Afterschool teacher Arshea Hall with guest chefs and wellness experts.
City Adventures/Ice Skating B (Gr. 4-5) Ice skating in the rink at Rockefeller Center or Bryant Park until April and then -- what’s your pleasure? Capoeira, rock climbing, fencing? Or maybe it's a chocolate factory, the wax museum, or the Intrepid's flight simulator? There are wonderful opportunities for city adventures all over Manhattan, and we're ready to explore them! Teachers include PS87 5th-grade teacher Lauri Posner.
